I am not quite sure if this (first exposed by our very own Bapa Blogger Malaysia) can be considered as plagiarism, it looks more like an advanced form of imitation to me. But then again, I don’t think anyone who is the Group Editor of a major English daily should “imitate” another work by a well-known writer, flattery or no flattery.
At this juncture, I am not going to judge as to whether this is indeed plagiarism or not. But if this is proven, then I do not think that person has the right to become an “Editor” any longer and he should resign without further delay. Of course the NST stood by their Group Editor but the thing is, wouldn’t it be better if there were less fuss and muss and just let the poor guy go?
That this story has also been picked up by the BBC is not only unflattering, it is also damaging to the image of this country. BBC comments on the exposure by stating that “Malaysia’s online watchdogs have claimed their first major scalp.” Hmm…another reason for a clampdown on the World Wide Web?
